GENERAL:
Many people are unaware that Fulton County operates a formal Civil Service or Merit System of career employment. The Fulton County Merit System recognizes a need for building and maintaining an effective organization based on individual merit. The laws, regulations and procedures under which the County Merit System operates are carefully designed to assure that all employees enjoy attractive career opportunities and objectives.
Reasonable guarantees of job security and tenure based upon performance are included in the system.
Our system includes the Classified Service and the Unclassified Service. Most positions are in the Classified Service. Successful applicants for jobs are selected by a competitive process. There are over 700 different classes of positions in the Classified Service requiring a wide variety of specialties and qualifications. Eligibility requirements vary widely among the classes. The Unclassified Service includes all other types of employment, such as elected and appointed officials.

It is the policy of Fulton County that there will be equal opportunity for every citizen, employee and applicant, based upon merit; without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability or sexual orientation.
