The Georgia Women’s History
Month Committee and the Georgia Commission on Women will recognize
“Georgia Women in Public Safety” at a reception to be held on Monday,
March 5, 2001, in Cox Hall at Emory University from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
A proclamation by Governor Barnes will be read, and Secretary of
State Cathy Cox will present the awards.
The keynote speaker will be Gale Buckner, Director of the
Governor’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
Previously, the Commission has honored women in historic
preservation, aviation, health care, politics, the visual arts, and female
athletes. This year, more
than 20 women will be honored for their outstanding contributions to
public safety in Georgia.
During
the ceremony, they will also recognize the winners of the Jean Childs
Young essay contest for Georgia high school students.
The winners of the essay contest will receive awards in honor of
the late Jean Childs Young, wife of former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young.
As a member of the Georgia Women’s History Month Committee, Mrs.
Young was supportive of many women’s issues.
The public is invited to the reception on March 5th.
Admission will be $15 (cash or check) per person at the door.
The Georgia Commission on Women and Emory Women’s Center are
sponsors of the reception. Co-chairs
of this year’s event are Laura Micham of Emory University’s Woodruff
Library and Tevi Taliaferro of the Historic Oakland Foundation.
