For the second time this month, elementary students
at a Fulton County school are proud to accept honors for their work and
dedication to a very special program. On Thursday, May 31st, the fourth
grade class at Brookview Elementary School will graduate from the Gang
Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program.
Sheriff Jacquelyn Barrett introduced the national
gang resistance program to Fulton County schools in 1994. Since that time,
G.R.E.A.T. has been taught specifically to middle school aged children.
This year, the program was expanded to the elementary level.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms made the
four (4) week program at Brookview Elementary possible through a federal
grant. Brookview is the second elementary school in Fulton County to
receive the G.R.E.A.T. program this year. As a result of this training,
students will receive graduate t-shirts and a personalized G.R.E.A.T.
"Certificate of Accomplishment".
Uniformed law enforcement officers teach the
G.R.E.A.T. program in forty-eight (48) states. To become a certified
G.R.E.A.T. officer, selected candidates must receive support and
recognition from their department and the local school board. The Fulton
County Sheriff's Office has five (5) deputies who are trained and
certified to teach G.R.E.A.T. Nine (9) programs were taught throughout the
county this school year.
Brookview Elementary School is located at 3250
Hammersjold Drive in East Point. The graduation is scheduled to begin at
9:30 a.m.
