For nine weeks, seventh grade
students at Walden Middle School participated in the nationally recognized
Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program taught by the
Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. On Tuesday, November 13, 2001, 126
students will be honored at a special graduation ceremony at their school.
Since 1994,
the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office has been teaching the G.R.E.A.T.
program to elementary and middle school students throughout Fulton County.
Specially trained deputies who teach G.R.E.A.T. have interacted with
thousands of students to provide education on the consequences of joining a
gang. During the nine-week course, students receive valuable information on
a host of topics, including; conflict resolution, drugs and neighborhoods,
cultural sensitivity, responsibility, and goal setting. The nine weekly
sessions of G.R.E.A.T. are taught in a classroom setting by a uniformed
deputy of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.
At the
graduation this Tuesday, students will receive a personalized “Certificate
of Accomplishment” and a G.R.E.A.T. graduate t-shirt. Special awards will
also be presented for outstanding participation in the program. The
graduation is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
