The Fulton County Jail will receive
national accreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA) on
Monday, January 13, 2002. After exceeding the necessary standards required
for accreditation, Sheriff Jacquelyn H. Barrett will be accepting the award
at the ACA conference in Charlotte, North Carolina tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
Last September, a team of assessors
from ACA arrived at the Fulton County Jail to begin the task of assessing
jail operations for the purpose of accreditation. Upon completion of the
assessment, the jail received a passing score of ninety-six (96). Yesterday
afternoon, Sheriff Barrett and the accreditation staff attended a hearing in
Charlotte to answer a battery of questions from four (4) representatives
from the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections. The panel unanimously
recommended accreditation for the Fulton County Jail at the conclusion of
yesterday’s hearing.
Sheriff Barrett will accept the
accreditation award tomorrow at an “invitation-only” banquet, which will be
held at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Jail accreditation is an on-going
process and requires annual certification reports to the Commission. The
Fulton County Jail will be reaccredited in three years.
