The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office
has been teaching the Gang Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program since
1994. Over the summer, deputies from the Community Relations Section
received recertification training and are now teaching the expanded 13-week
program in area middle schools.
The G.R.E.A.T. program, sponsored by
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, teaches middle school aged
children the consequences of gang activity and encourages students to make
positive choices in their lives. Through classroom instruction, uniformed
deputies interact with students and allow them opportunities to roll play a
variety of scenarios requiring decision making skills.
The expanded 13-week G.R.E.A.T. program
is taught in 48 states by uniformed law enforcement officers.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office
is now teaching G.R.E.A.T. at Ronald McNair Middle School in College Park.
Following the program, students will be honored at a graduation ceremony in
the school gymnasium. G.R.E.A.T. students will receive t-shirts and a
personalized “Certificate of Accomplishment”. In addition, awards will be
distributed to students achieving top honors.
The next G.R.E.A.T. program is
scheduled to begin on February 12th at River Trial Middle School in North
Fulton County. Additional schools will be added this spring.
